An in-depth review with minimal story spoilers covering Spike Chunsoft's latest game for the Nintendo Switch, Shiren the Wanderer: The Mystery Dungeon of Serpentcoil Island. It's an entry in the Mystery Dungeon series of roguelike action RPG titles that started all the way back in 1993 with Enix's Torneko no Daibouken for the Nintendo Super Famicom, and is the sixth game in the original Fuurai no Shiren games that spawned from that original 16-bit title.
A big role-playing series in Japan, there have been a steady stream of Shiren releases over the past decade, but this recently released title is the first brand new adventure in the series in over a decade. While it includes some modern touches like expanded online features, stream-friendly display options and quality of life improvements, Shiren 6 is for the most part a return to its roots, a tough-as-nails, procedurally-generated dungeon crawling RPG that is unfair at times, but gives the player a great sense of accomplishment when they finally see success.
Gameplay was captured on real hardware using the Elgato HD60 S+ and video/audio was edited using Davinci Resolve Studio 18.
